Athelstan 1100

Athelstan 1100

This summer sees a bumper programme of events in Malmesbury to commemorate the 1100 year anniversary of King Athelstan’s coronation.

Athelstan, the first King of England and the grandson of King Alfred the Great, had a very special relationship with Malmesbury and his name can be seen throughout the town where he is remembered through street names, business names, and organisation names. Malmesbury is also the place where he chose to be buried. Athelstan gifted land to the people of Malmesbury which is still held by the Warden and Freemen of Malmesbury to this day!

In commemoration of this great King, the people of Malmesbury will join in celebration this June and July 2024 to honour and recognise his contribution to our town. A full programme of events has been planned with speakers telling us of the history, performances bringing the period to life through theatre and music, and battle re-enactments that will put you firmly in the heart of the Anglo-Saxon age.
