What are Story Sacks?

Sharing books with young children is a great way to help them develop skills like attention, listening, language and communication. The more the child is engaged in a story, the more they will learn. To be truly engaged, they need to be immersed in the story; moving around, using their whole body. Not with their arms and legs tucked neatly away, concentrating on keeping this wholly unnatural position with no room for any other thoughts in their head!

Story Sacks can elevate your storytime session, offering a multi sensory approach to reading and helping to develop early literacy skills.

Having the right resources on hand with your book will help you to make reading and using language fun. When used in a group situation, they can encourage children to listen together and promote turn-taking.

Many traditional Story Sacks contain a plethora of items that increase the cost of the pack and are often unnecessary. We have kept our Story Sacks simple with just the essential resources to accompany the book, but with suggestions of how to extend the story and learning. We also offer short courses for practitioners to develop their story telling skills. We offer a range of Story Sacks for children from birth to 5 years which vary in size to suit all budgets. Story sacks can also be used by parents at home - they work just as well on an individual basis as they do in a group situation.

Each book comes in a brightly coloured natural cotton drawstring bag to match the book cover, along with an identification tag. Inside are all the resources you need to represent the characters in the book and bring your story to life. We’ve paired our books with beautiful wooden sustainable products from Lanke Kade (suitable from age 10 months), hand and finger puppets from the Puppet company (suitable from age 12 months), or official plush toy products (suitable from birth).

Story Sacks are also available in plain natural cotton drawstring bags. If you would prefer this, just let us know in the additional information section at checkout.

How to store your Story Sacks

We know only too well the struggles of space in Early Years settings! And whilst hanging your Story Sacks on coat hooks on the wall may be the best way to quickly identify the one that you are looking for, we find that baskets are a good space saving alternative.

Smaller Story Sacks can be stored in picnic baskets, stacked on top of each other in varying sizes. These make an attractive addition to any commercial or home nursery. Larger Story Sacks can be housed in large wicker log baskets, which get rid of the clutter and are an attractive feature in themselves. If you have any other storage solutions, we would love to hear about them!
